Use of Forklift trucks on the public highway

We are looking for information regarding restrictions etc to the use of flt on the public highway from the point of view of the local authority/police. Does any body have any information regarding the traffic offences used in the case of moores timber merchants and Mohammed Omar Akhtar in 1997 when his car was struck by a forklift on a public road. The HSE initially refused to treat the death as a work related fatality and the case was investigated by the traffic police. Whom charged the driver and the company with traffic offences.

As far as I am aware there is now a section on RIDDOR forms that allows you to indicate if an accident ocurred on the highway.
as for using FLT on a public highway, then you need suitbale Road fund licence, license plates etc.

Have you tried actually asking the local authority and police?
It might just work

The requirements for road fund license, MOT etc are not always applicable. There is a limited mileage class of vehicle registration which exempts it from these. This class is commonly used for show vehicles.

Ben,
The requirements for road fund licence and insurance are applicable if you are to use the FLT on the public highway. FLT's are classed as specials vehicles and the road fund licence will cost you £90.75 for 6 months. Intial registration with the DVLA will aslo cost you £38. If you have any other queries speak to the DVLA they are very helpful.
cheers
Paul
