Posted By Paul Oliver having perused the jobs section in this months SHP, I would like to know where the Universtiy of Exeter thinks they are going to be able get a MIOSH qualified safety proffesional with 5 years experience for £12000 per annum (pro rata). This surely has to be a joke. I can't believe, that at a time when IOSH are being so pro-active in trying to raise the profile of the safety proffesional that job advertisements like this are even allowed to be published. I could rant even more but I'm hoping the users of this forum will add to my comments. Paul

Posted By David A Jones I looked twice as well. If I remember correctly (haven't got my copy of SHP with me) this was only a 0.5 FTE post. Hopefully the salary was after prorataring and not before. Mind you, that only makes it £24k - which is still low if you are correct on the level of experience and qualification they are looking for.

Posted By neil poyznts-powell There also seems to be some confusion with employers regarding IOSH grades. I have seen vacancies requesting TechSP and MIOSH? Also, alot requesting MIOSH and two years experience when you can't get MIOSH without three years. With regards to pay the diffrence in rates for similar posts does seem to vary considrably within the same region. Regards, Neil

Posted By Tony O'Keefe Paul, Thanks for the tip, this kind of package sounds really good! It works out at less than £1500.00 p.a. pro-rata more than they are offering the part time cleaner who can earn £5.11 per hour. (not that I am saying that there is anything wrong with being a cleaner). No info regarding the post on their web-site, I do hope this is a typo though it may be of some use to someone who has gained MIOSH and is just starting out? Or are we all getting paid too much? Tony

Posted By Craig Lydiate Paul Well said! The range of salaries in SHP I find astonishing and not based, it would seem, on any thought out strategy. As an employer of safety consultants the expectations from organisations and employees is a complete shambles. Perhaps ISOH should publish salary surveys to help establish realistic ground rules or expectations? Craig

Posted By fats van den raad What baffles me is that I've seen ads for assistant safety bods with certificate requirement offering 8-10k more than what I'm on in a managerial post with MIOSH RSP!! And then it is in a relatively low risk (and undoubtedly over paid) sector as well!!!. I once applied for one of these, only to be knocked back at the first stage with a very friendly letter stating "Unfortunately you are totally over qualified for the position. (If we appoint you you would be higher qualified than the department manager!)" I kid you not, just like that. Should have stopped after the certificate!!
