Can anyone recommend a good practitioner's handbook which covers all the bases from the legal perspective and guidance to management etc.? I've used Tolley's Safety handbook for years but am thinking of switching for 2005.

Steve.

I have a growing library of H&S publications - forced by study, but I have yet to find a publication that is as comprehensive as Tolleys H&S at Work Yearbook for practitioner general and legal requirements.

I find that Croners is a little too complex - designed for the legal profession in essence rather than practitioners. Although some legal books are a good back-up for looking up specific legal cases ect, such as Redgraves Heath and Safety, but rather expensive.

Tolleys also produce some good and less expensive books on legal cases e.g. Safety, Health and Environmental Cases.

IOSH also have a good range of publications, most which also adorn my shelves, but tend to be directed more at specific topic areas.

You might also try Safety at Work by Ridley and Channing or The Handbook of Health and Safety at Work by Stranks.

If I was you however, I would stick with the Tolleys Yearbook, I certainly find it very useful and regularly used publication.

Regards...

Stuart

Steve,
for a practical approach that focuses on "how to" but also has useful stuff like summary pages about the "why"-- try Jordans H&S Management. (www.jordanspublishing.co.uk)
For construction, try the CITB guide GE700 as a source of good H&S practice.
I have used both for many years
Hope this helps

Books by Scott Geller are great on behavioural safety management, a radical and very cost-effective methodology for guiding management and staff. They apply psychology scientifically with lots of practical illustrations, research evidence and some amusing cartoons. They address legal issues as parameters rather than in the foreground. Relevant titles, available from Amazon, are:
'Working Safe. How to help people actively care for health and safety', CRC Press, 2001
'The Psychology of Safety Handbook', CRC Press, 2001

Hi, I've always used Croner's "the law of H&S" but also fancy a change. Does anyone have a source of the Tolley's Handbook?

thanks

You can get Tolley's from LexisNexis on 0845 608 1188 or at www.butterworths.com.

I have my Tolley's H&S at Work book with me all the time.
