Posted By Robert Tailby Does anyone know of any guidance or current standards for guarding of stone cutting saws in a stone masonry environment? These are large slow turning blades (similar to circular saw for wood) that historically have not been guarded. This is to help someone with their PUWER risk assessment.

Posted By D. Hilton Robert BS EN 12418:2000 'Masonry & Stone cutting off machines-safety' related to this type of equipment manufactured after 2000. Other than that you could consider BS.EN 953: 1998 Safety of Machinery-Guarding. In relation to the second posting, in the case of portable cut off machinery I would suggest using: BS EN 1454:1997 'Portable, hand held, internal combustion cut off machines- safety. Regards Darren

Posted By Paul Grady There is no specific information sheet. PUWER reg 11 requires adequate bguarding. This is interpreted as allowing only the minimum exposed blade necessary to complete the cut. I have seen these machines in fenced off areas, with the operator controls being sufficiently remote to prevent contact with moving parts. The operator acts to police entry to the area.
