Everyone -

I need help. An onsite presentation has been sprung on me on Manual Handling. Now I have loads of info on Manual Handling, but I want to re-inforce to our lot onsite the cost of Occupational Back Pain in terms of their personal lives, ie how pain can effect them financially, socially etc and what they can do to avoid it.

Does anyone have any info on this or can point me in the direction of a website that gives personal accounts (not audio as I cannot download it) of living with back pain.

Yours in mild desperation!

Hi Jennifer

From personal experiance

Financial costs of back injury: lost earnings, treatment costs (ostiopithy etc), prescription costs (pain relief).

Social effects: restriction on ability to enjoy many activities.

Effects on family life: restrictions on ability to enjoy activities with children, temperement sometimes dependent on level of pain, long term pain may lead to depression.

Health effects: appart from back pain there are both short term and long term effects of taking pain.

One positive effect: I have retrained and now work as a health and safety proffesesional.

OH Proffesionals please note, some time ago I started pilates classes, this has had a considerable improvement to my injury.

Regards

Hey Jennifer,

I have sent you an email, I hope it helps.

Dave,

Your story is very similar to my own and the strange thing is, I returned to my physio just today after a very long time away. My physio is going to start me on a course of pilates classes which she swears blind are the way to go.

Good luck to the both of you.

Best regards,

John
