To all and anyone
The scenario is we have a number of retail stores with one tread steps up and down into display areas on the shop floor.
Dependent on location and building type the majority of the steps will either be removed over a period of time or as is the case in some stores a contrasting colored nosing will be fitted to all step edges.
Can anyone clarify whether these nosings should be of an anti slip type as our maintenance manager is concerned that we would be adding an additional trip hazard to the existing step.
regards
Ali

Hi
On the reasonable grounds. I would say that they only need to be non slip if they are near the door and the floor/step is likely to get wet. Other wise a contrasting colour to the flooring is suitable for the visually impaired. If you get stuck Argo do a range of options.

Alison - sounds like you have asked a very hard and technical question>
A guess for what its worth, your replacement programme is the correct way forward, identifying the edges will help members of the public (or may be partially sighted), they in my view should be no more slippy than what they have replaced.

It's going to be a matter of risk assessment based upon the condition of the nosings. If they become worn and slippery you will be at risk of being sued by any person injured in a consequent slipping hazard - irrespective of DDA considerations. It then tends to come down to repairing the step or installing the anti-slip nosing.

Just came across this company amongst a stack of these business info cards we sometimes receive in the mail. (This lot came via HSM Magazine, November issue).
Fibregrid Limited
Unit 10
42 Hollands Road
Haverhill
CB9 8YB

www.FibreGrid.com
Card shows a stair nosing product which claims to be both slip resistant and DDA compliant
