Posted By Glynn I am going for an h/s interview next week its an internal vacancy and the job is to assisst the health and safety officer on site.....The place I work at is a power station and I was wondering as I have not had much pratice with intervies what type of questions they might ask me......Any advice would be much apprecited as I would like this job very much and the money is very good at £28,000

Posted By Mark Bywater Glynn, You're going to need to know practical stuff at interview stage I guess. It really depends on what H&S involvement you have had previously and the amount of experience you can show you have had. Dealing with problems and showing that you can get results is better than just running to management with problems - they like problem solvers. Pro-active as opposed to reactive is always good, show that you have done this in the past. Mostly a good base of H&S knowledge goes a long way too - not just Regs but simple every day stuff like hierarchy of controls etc. Being able to talk to groups of people - you may be asked to give a presentation on a subject of their choice with only 5 minutes to prepare it, great stuff. Bite the bullet and go for it - forget who you were and remember who you want to be! And that's only to assist the H&S Officer!!!!! Get me the phone number I want an interview at this place. H&S Manager over two sites and on a lot less. I'm gutted - and looking elsewhere now. Good luck Glynn - you go for it, Mark

Posted By Delwynne I don't have any specific question/answer advice however although some people may disagree I always find honesty a disarming tactic in interviews. Giving the interviewer an honest opinion (particularly as it is internal) will not only show that you pay attention to what is going on around you, but will also show you're not afraid to speak your mind, even in situations which you might feel uncomfortable in. If the opportunity arises you could try mentioning one or two areas where you have ideas to improve things, also remain positive & enthusiastic. If you don't know the answer say so, but back it up with something like ' I'd be interested in finding out about that, can you recommend any training/books/articles etc'. Only other thing that springs to mind is if you have had any recent procedural changes or accidents - they might ask you about them. Good luck - hope it goes well for you.

Posted By Glynn Thanks guys.............Yes it alot of money for an assistant although I would be taking a pay cut its something that I have always wanted to do..........All the training is in place for diploma and its to eventually take on the h/s officers job and he is on even more at £42,000 believe it or not........

Posted By Laurie As it's internal, you probably wouldn't have got the interview if they didn't think you have the technical knowledge, so it's going to be the usual c***p like - what can you in particular bring to this job, what are your particular strengths ("people skills" is good management speak), what are your weaknesses (none, always none!), why do you want the job (particularly as you're taking a pay cut), why should we give it to you rather than anybody else (Because you might find somebody better qualified, but you won't find anybody with more expertise or commitment to the company) they may throw you a wobbly like "What does your wife/husband/partner etc think of this. Remember if they they do ask you something about which you've got no idea, or hadn't considered don't wing it. If it's technical say something like "Oh dear, that's something I haven't had to keep in my head in my current post, I would need to look that up (There's someone who's not afraid to admit he doesn't know, and is willing to do something about it), if it's more general, then give a more general answer, and if it's not something which has come up in the past say so, and give some tentative thoughts about how you would tackle it. What's wrong with your current post (nothing, I love it, and still enjoy it, but I am now seeling a new challenge) You'll walk it Laurie

Posted By Graeme Main Glynn, I have always found that they will ask if you have any questions at the end of the interview, and as its internal you will know all about holidays, pay etc etc. The question I have always used and it never let me down is: - Do you feel that you have seen or heard anything during this interview that would prevent me from doing this job? They do not normally expect this type of question and it does put them on the back foot a bit, if you don't get the position then you should a least get an explanation of why not, but more often than not they come out with "no" because they haven't had time to think, so the job is yours for the taking. Whatever happens good luck and keep going for it. Graeme.

I’ve just email my CV over to your place for the H&S Manager's job and they have replied with an interview date!!! Only joking good luck with the job, that’s the easy bit, then you have to get through NEBOSH, then you might need advice!! Hope it goes well
