One of our contractors has quoted this standard (BS18001). I have ordered a copy on CD but until such times as it arrives has anyone got an electronuc copy I can have a look at.

Either you or your contractor are wrong. I think you or he/she means OHSAS 18001. If it is your contractor saying this I would go elsewhere

Like other management standards it is what you make of the system. You need to look at whether the contractor is stating a certified system, if yes then you can feel comfortable that it is being audited every six months in a depth you will not achieve without significant resources. Look also at whether the other 2 primary standards, ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 14001:1996 are also followed and independently certificated. There are certifcates and registration numbers attached to each of these, normally. If you are not familiar with these systems you really need to look closely at 18002 which provides guidance on 18001.
I am afraid the electronic availability is a bit like rocking horse manure. it is one of the few instances where I prefer paper to make some quick personal prompt notes. BSI are however pretty good at despatch
