Posted By Garry Mark The self-retracting blades can be suitable but it depends on the work force mentality. I have personally seen tape applied around the handle of these style of knifes to stop the blade retracting as it was inconvenient for the user. Depending on the industry you are in, the ‘Fish-Tail’ style blades could be an alternative as these blades are actually inside the handle of the blade. Posted By fats van den raad True, there are loads of different safety cutting devises out there, with different applications and there will no doubt be instances where certain types of safety knife would not be suitable, e.g. I know that electricians find it almost impossible to use the retractable blade knives when stripping cable, but then there are other purpose made tools available. The issue of taping up retractable blade knives to leave the blade out is however a management issue and does not impact on the safety features of the knife itself. Just ask yourself - when an emoployee uses tape to overide a safety interlock on a machine, do you deal with it by changing the type of interlock you use or do you address the issue of non-compliance with SOP?
