I have been asked about the L1, L5 and L10 inspection records for a series of passenger lifts. Not being a lift expert I was interested to know what these where. Can anyone point me in the right direction to find out what these mean?

Regards,

Carl...

Try contacting an insurance company who act as 'competent persons' for LOLER & PUWER inspections such as Allianz Cornhill.

Carl I believe these references may be LG1, LG5 and LG10 if so they refer to documents issued by the Safety Assessment Federation or SAFed. SAFed liase with the Health & Safety Executive and their documents are accepted through a wide range of Industry as good practice.
The majority of the Inspection Companies are members of this trade organisation. SAFed issue documents relating to how and what should be tested.
I only have a copy of LG1 which is titled "Guidelines on the Thorough Examination and Testing of Lifts"
You may also wish to look at;
BSEN81 (1988)Safety rules for the construction and installation of lifts.

(PS I have no connection with SAFed, however I have used their documents)

Carl,

These are supplementary tests and examinations which can be required by the Competent Person carrying out the Thorough Examination of the Lift. (Some dismantling or testing may be required which is beyond scope of the Thorough Examination).

The LG1, 5 and 10 (years) are the recommended frequencies.

Quite often these are carried out as a matter of good practice. (incidentally some of the tests can be applied to goods only lifts)

If you need more please e mail me direct.

Just to clarify -

LG1 is a Safed Document entitled "Lift Guidelines: Guidelines on the Thorough Examination and Testing of Lifts" which replaced the HSE guidance note PM7 "Lifts: Thorough Examination and Testing"

This document applies to all "Lifts" and specifies varying frequencies for examinations / tests of 6 months, 1 year, 5 years and 10 years.

Some of this guidance relates more to the content of the statutory LOLER Reg 9 Thorough Examination (6 monthly for a passenger lift) but the 1, 5 and 10 yearly recommendations, to which you refer, are additional to these requirements and may be called for at any time by the Competent Person, not just at the recommended intervals.

As a lift owner / duty holder you may elect to have these tests completed, usually by the maintenance provider, at the recommended periodicity but I suggest that you discuss your particular situation further with the Competent Person or their employing organisation (usually Allianz Cornhill, Beaureu Veritas, Royal and Sun Alliance, or Zurich) who carry out your Thorough Examinations.

If you wish to discuss this further please email me directly.
