I am interested in finding out some more information on managing health and safety in the leisure industry, covering hotels and general leisure facilities.
I am looking to move my career into this area and I would like to know of any information sources or knowledge you have.
Many thanks

Hi Paul,
Regardless of what industry your currenty in the NEBOSH general certificate is a good place to start, and can be found for a reasonable price at certain colleges as a part time 9 month course.
Hope this has been of use.

Hi
In this field I would recommend Gauntlet Risk Management - run by All Risk management. They are highly respected for their consutlancy and training within hotels and leisure, winning the 2004 Insurance Times Risk Management Award in conjunction with an insurance broker who specialises in hotels/leisure.
www.goriskmanagement.co.uk
Should give you some more ideas
Regards,
Chris

Hi Paul,
I have worked in the Leisure Industry for many years, mainly in Swimming Pools and Leisure Centres.
I would suggest visiting the Institute of Sport and Recreation Management website (www.isrm.co.uk). They provide courses and seminars on subjects such as management and safety.
Hope this is of use.

Hi Paul,
I would wholeheartedly endorse the suggestion that you should get some formal training on general H&S, especially if you are considering a career in this area. There is useful info on this website about the kinds of training you will need in order to ensure some kind of upward mobility, look at the membership info and professional development sections, or browse the careers forum.
On the subject of info about H&S in the Leisure Industry, HSE publish a few useful bits of guidance in your field, such as Swimming Pool safety, Go Karts and so on. You should contact HSE books on 01787 881165 and ask for a catalogue or visit their website on www.hsebooks.co.uk,
John

I have worked in the Leisure Industry for over 10 years, from Lifeguard through to general manager in large sites in London. I now work as a H&S trainer for St John and would agree with most posts on this in some small way, firstly the ISRM is a great source of information for leisure and recreation, from their own risk assessment package to information notes.
Also i would agree that any good H&S course is useful, i train IOSH which are good courses, the NEBOSH Gen. Cert is a good qualification to have, maybe slightly too much for your needs but better to have more information than not enough.
St john run some good H&S courses, just go to a reputable training provider and if possible talk to people who have used them before to get feedback on them.
regards
Ian
