Posted By Anita Parkinson We have a workshop with inspection pit, the majority of our work is carried out on hgv's and trailers. quick question - does our inspection pit require inspecting by an outside engineer? to certify it is still fit for purpose? how often would this have to be carried out? who would do this? surveyor? structural engineer. Your thoughts gratefully recived Thanks Anita

Posted By Ron Hunter Fair to say that inspection pits generally frowned upon (confined spaces and all that) and vehicle lifts preferred (assuming you have the head room in your workshop!). The pit presumably has ATEX lighting which will require periodic test/inspection by competent electrician. Other than that, see no reason to bring in external contractor or consultant?

Posted By Anita Parkinson Thanks for your reply i understand about the risk implications with confined spaces but was also sure that, other than regular visual inspections, it would not have to recieve further inspections from surveyors or such like. i do however consider the inspection pit to be a safer place of work than the lift even if it is a confined space.
