Posted By Robert Wise A quick question for any asbestos surveyors out there: Do your employers have a health surveillance programme for you? If yes, what kind of health surveillance do they carry out and would you be kind enough to provide me with copies of any standard pro formas etc in this respect? For everyone else out there, do you think that health surveillance should be carried out for asbestos surveyors, or is the risk sufficiently low enough not to need it? Your thoughts are welcomed. Many thanks for your assistance Rob

Posted By Tyler Lung function tests and chest xrays were the norm. I've not been carrying out surveys for a couple of years now but I am sure no much has changed.

Posted By Ron Hunter No requirement for health surveillance unless action levels reached - see Control of Asbestos at Work Approved Code of Practice L28. Competent trained surveyors should be operating to safe systems of work which mean nowhere near these levels! I do hope that you have conducted adequate fit testing of RPE and have appropriate records for all surveyors!

Posted By Robert K Lewis Ron My understanding of the regs is that the Action Levels are not set with reference to the use of RPE instead they trigger the need for it if the levels are exceeded. If this is so it is a little bit more tricky to Risk Assess out of Health surveillance. In my view any survey company opting out of surveillance is putting themselves at risk. Putting the Humanitarian hat on - is it really not worth tracking the health of persons who are known to be entering risk areas on a regular basis Bob

Posted By NickW its now called an asbestos 'fit-to-work' medical. and if you dont have this done you need to prove that surveyors work consistantly below the action levels under CAWR 2002. We do both medicals and personal exposure assessments but then we are UKAS accredited and so have to go further than the 3-day P402 and bulk kit gang

Posted By Ron Hunter I'm intrigued as to what this 'fitness to work' medical actually measures. Could NickW provide me with a bit more info.? Also, if someone who smokes, how would this affect the outcome of that medical?
