Posted By Shelagh O'Sullivan From time to time I receive concerns from employees regarding 'irritating' fumes emitted from the hot wire process of cutting the shrink-wrap film. I have previously been assured from SDSs that the shrinkfilms/fumes are non-hazardous in composition. Does anyone have any experience of ill-health effects caused by such activities? Pending LEV modifications, I am looking to re-assure the employees. Thanks Shelagh

Posted By Stephen D. Clarke About 6 years ago I came across a similar problem when with a former employer. I seem to remember that there is a condition known as "Shrink Wrappers Asthma" first identified by a birmingham university respiratory group. As I recall its the nitrogen oxide fumes from the gas heat gun rather than volatiles from the plastic that are implicated.

Posted By MarkSMark In my experience the best way to reassure employees is to get some monitoring done by a recognisable external company. That way they can see a report stating that there is no problem.
