Posted By Jim Newby I'm interested in learning what safety management structures larger companies with multiple sites, use to manage their safety responsibilities. We have recently been taken over and I've been asked to review how we ought to be structured to effectively manage safety. At present we have a mixture of Full and Part time, variously qualified site safety officers , two of whom are due to retire shortly, reporting directly to a senior Human Resources Manager. Any variations or recommended reading on the subject would be of interest.

Posted By Wazza My personal opinion is to have site safety managers, who oversee procedures, systems etc. The remaining site management should be expected, along with employee representatives to undertake audits, inspections and assessments, as all have a collective responsibility. Secondly, I would suggest that each manager report either to the senior group manager? It is important to emphasise the need for collective responsibility, safety is everyones business, but many don't realise. Take the time to review management at each site, look at accident trends/rates and determine from them how they think they can cope with the demands of todays legislation. One would doubt whether they can. Oh and as a final straw, you need the board champion - the one who will fight your cause - in the boardroom. Hopefully he will have a backbone, because the one I had prior to my current position was about as much use as a fleece in the tropics. Take the time and consult! Good luck. Wazza

Posted By Robin B My company is a multi-national and split into business units, countries and sites. There is a global HSE department, a business unit HSE dept, a country HSE head and each site has at least one site HSE Officer. Global is the driving force and together with the BU undertake audits of each site on a rolling basis. The BU group look after the specifc sites under their control [we have 6 BU's]. In the UK all the site HSEO's [16 of us] meet on a quarterly basis as a jopint forum under the chairmanship of the country HSEO. this group is a little re-active than pro-active, tho that is changing slowly. Each site HSEO has a direct link to the country organisation, the BU and Global it works pretyy well. Robin
