I have a question for my colleagues in Local Authorities regarding the provision of Ballistic Trousers for Refuse Collection operatives.

We currently provide our Refuse Collectors with Saturn yellow hi-vis trousers with ballistic protection. However, having just appointed a new supplier of PPE, they are having difficulty in providing this equipment. They are able to supply navy blue trousers with ballistic protection, but not hi-vis.
It is claimed that hi-vis ballistic trousers are "special order" and not readily available.

I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on this or could advise as whether their Refuse Collectors are a) provided with ballistic trousers and (b) are the trousers hi-vis?

Ballistic Trousers!

We had enough problems last summer getting them to wear long trousers instead of their prefeerred shorts!

Do you have a web link to the suppliers of these trousers (not fusy about the colour of them).

Thanks,

As a customer you have requested hi-vis, I would have thought it relatively simple. Use another supplier if your existing supplier cannot provide them.

Those who were responsible for apppinting the new supplier should have given more consideration to the PPE requirements that I'm sure you have already been identified by completing the risk assessment process.

Another classic example that safety practitioners can be the last to be involved unless something has gone wrong.

Now I know I'm getting cynical!!

We use them for employees carrying out clinical waste collections, when our supplier let us down we bought the ballistic material direct and had trousers made to our specification. We don't use hi-viz but i'm sure there are plenty of manufacturers out there who could incorporate it into a current design of hi-viz trousers..

I know what a ballistic missile is, and ballistic trousers conjour up all sorts of surrealistic scenarios!
