Posted By Lynn Judge Does anyone out there have personal experience or information about the manufacture of Incense, in largish quantities, for use in Churches etc.

Posted By Roger the Dodger I have no personal experience of using incense. I know there some old Polish chap, who lives in Rome who knows alot about it. His 'phone number should be in the Yellow Pages under 'S' for Spiritual Guidance.

Posted By Jonathan Breeze Roger, I'm sure that bloke you know would be able to give a fantastic explanation of the symbolism & theology behind the use of incense (something to do with the prayers of the saints ascending to heaven & being a pleasing aroma to God - I think.) However he's probably less good at the occupational exposure issues for Poly Aromatic Hydrocarbons. Lynn, No personal experience sadly, but I've done a little bit of searching around the subject and have come across the following links on the BBC news website regarding incense use: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/1467409.stm http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4026537.stm They should provide links to further research into the subject. Are you involved in the manufacture of the product or the use of the product? Knowing this may help the forum with pointers for you.

Posted By Lynn Judge Thank you Ron and John for your helpful suggestions. I will follow them up. I am involved with an organisation who both makes and uses Incense although it's on the manufacture side that I am more interested, all to do with those aromatic hydrocarbons etc as commented. I am hoping to get hold of information from the suppliers of the ingredients but at the moment there seems to be a dirth of info. Lynn

Posted By Gilly Margrave The major supplier of Church Incense is Prinknash. You could always try asking them for a Safety Data Sheet. http://www.davidsemporium.co.uk/Prinknash/ Gilly

Posted By Lynn Judge Jonathan, didn't have any luck with the links, kept getting a nil return, so tried bbc help. Most stuff people offering to sell incense but a couple of interesting articles in the news section about polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Thank you.

Posted By Lynn Judge Thanks Gilly, the problem with that is knowing which ingredient one wishes to have the data sheet on as each aroma is made up of several different ones. I am attempting to get data sheets from ingredient suppliers but not having much luck so far. May fall back on your idea if all else fails, however, not sure Prinknash will be too keen on giving info. to a possible competitor! Lynn

Posted By Gilly Margrave It's amazing what comes up with a bit of idle Googling. Have a look at http://www.oils4life.co.uk/download.asp if only for curiosity value. Gilly

Posted By Jonathan Breeze Lynn, the links worked for me just when I cut & pasted them, but you seem to have found the same articles anyway. Lots of safety data sheets there, Good lateral thinking Gilly. Looked at the Prinknash site and left it with the impression of cloistered monks in a scriptorium writing Safety Data Sheets in illuminated text. I guess the main problem is when you heat or burn the stuff, the fumes produced will differ based on several variables, e.g. heat & quality of charcoal used, mix of incense, ventilation of building (draughty 10th century cathederal vs hermetically sealed modern church), type of thurible or censer used to burn the incense in, experience of the thurifer (person who swings the thing about - I had to look that one up btw.) etc. etc. It looks like a nightmare to work out!

Posted By Gilly Margrave For a really bizarre discussion of Thurible technique follow this link. Anyone fancy a SSoW for swinging a burning handbag though 360 degrees? http://forum.ship-of-foo...=get_topic;f=11;t=000379 Gilly

Posted By Stuart Nagle Lynn. I would have thought that contacting the supplier of the aromatic oils that are infused into the sticks was your best bet, to get a handle on the type of oils and what exactly goes into the process of scenting them.... Just a thought... Stuart
