Can anyone point me in the direction of the applicable health and safety legislation that applies to houses which are owned by businesses but which are let or provided free to employees? I'm thinking here about sectors such as agriculture where houses are often provided to employees as part of their pay rather than professional property-rental companies.
As they are domesic premises rather than places of work I'm a wee bit confused as to what applies.

I think you're being a bit over-cautious here! Apart from the usual landlord/tenant provisions that will be covered in a lease or other agreement, why would there be any question of H&S legislation applying?
Doubtless someone will be along in a heartbeat to tell me I'm wrong!

I would tend to agree as its not 'at work' but it seems to be something that "looks like safety, smells like safety, so here catch". My inclination is that its outside of what we would classically look at as h&s legislation, but that's only a guess.

The question to ask is are they 'at work' when in the property, or are they 'at home'?
I would suggest not at work unless part of the property was used (for example) as an office - then certain H&S requirements would apply, such as workstation assessment, lighting, trip hazards, manual handling, etc...etc...

Nope, they're not at work. So does anyone with experience fo this know which regs. do apply as that's way outside my current knowledge - its a whole new area?

I would say that they are at home and outside any occupational health and safety legislation.
Having said that DuPont used to and probably still do investigate injuries at home when an employee loses time through it.

I assume that you are looking at this from the employers point of view.
I don't think that "construction work" done by the company or its contractors to maintain or repair the properties would be exempt from the CDM regulations. (Assuming other exemptions small works, etc. don't apply)
DIY by the occupants/tenants would be exempt
