Posted By Heather Aston Francis I assume you mean PPE Regs, not PUWER. PPE has to be fit for the purpose. It's reasonable to expect that new shoes might need to be "broken in" but that they should then fit sufficiently well not to give blisters. Not sure what you mean by "what are the implications?" - for who? Heather

Posted By Francis E S Hone Thanks Heather possibly! i was thinking of provision and use as well as ppe regs as it the initial use of new safety shoes cuasing the injury IE Blisters Would employees have a claim against an employer if he provided safety shoe's that caused blisters when worn ? How long would one expect new shoes to cuase this problem? How long would one expect employees to put up with blisters Caused by Safety shoe's supplied by an employer? Should an employer improve the quality of safety shoes and would this eliminate the risk of blisters?

Posted By Shelagh O'Sullivan Francis Heather's response nutshelled it. 'Fit for purpose.' Is the risk associated with a blister, greater than the risks for which you have specified safety footwear. I'd doubt it! Don't cheapskate on the footwear, it can be a false economy. My issue, average £25-30 per pair. Only occasionally do I get reports of unbearable blisters and then I offer to exchange them. Most of our footwear is worn for internal purposes and they can last 18-24mths. If you buy a pair of shoes for that amount for outside of work, and wear them for 8/10hrs per day they'll not last as well as the safety shoes. On the other hand(/foot), don't encourage the trendy expensive ones - even with employees contributions - my experience is that the wearers find them heavy and uncomfortable day-in/day-out and end up coming and asking for the comfy cheaper models. PS I insist on them providing their own replacement laces and polish, but I'm probably wrong to do so. Shelagh

Posted By Ken Taylor You'll be wrong about the laces, Shelagh. Is'nt the goodwill of the employees worth more than the price of a pair of laces? The blisters may be due to either poor fit or lack of flexibility of the shoe. If the former, a better-fitting pair would seem advisable. Flexibility should, however, be improvable. Meanwhile the wearer could try thicker socks or a plaster! The main consequences are probably: non-use - which, if you allow this and the person sustains an injury that the shoes could have prevented, could result in legal or enforcement action against the employer; poor work performance due to foot problems; and additional sickness absence. It's worth being sure that the blister problem is real and not just an excuse for non-wearing for some other reason. Giving employees a choice of safety shoe from a pre-agreed range really has advantages.
