Posted By Emlyn Troy I refer to the article published in the SHP magazine which I believe dates back to June 04. It refers to a designer who was prosecuted for not reducing the risks associated with blockwork. The blocks used in the project weighed 36kg, and the article goes on to state that the maximum weight under CDM is 20kg. I'm sure I won't be the first person to have posted about this, but I would be grateful if someone could tell me where this 20kg rule came from, as there is no mention of it in either CDM, the ACOP, or the manual handling regulations and their associated guidance. Many thanks, Emlyn. Btw, the article can be found here: http://www.shponline.co....e=archive&article_id=170

Posted By Alison Entwistle I think it is from a Construction Information Sheet - handling cement blocks - or something similar. You should be able to find in on HSE Books or on the HSE website under the MSD mini site.

Posted By alan bradley I don't know where it comes from but it seems to be on the same lines as Manual Handling where the "folklore" suggests a maximum of 25 kg. Alan Bradley

Posted By Heather Aston It is indeed from construction information sheet 37 - handling heavy building blocks - available as a pdf on HSE website. It says "After taking account of expert opinion and the long history of complaints over handling heavy blocks, CONIAC has concluded that there is a high risk of injury in the single-handed, repetitive manual handling of blocks heavier than 20 kg (44 lbs)." So now you know. Not a maximum weight really, more of a guidance thing. Heather

Posted By Martyn Hendrie The CDM link is the designers duty to eliminate hazards and minimise risk (so far as is reasonably practicable) at the design stage.
