Is it OK to make up airlines for a workshop using Jubilee hose clips or does it have to be press clips that are used

Any assistance appreciated.

I don't know about workshops in particular but we only use 'jaymec' style couplings for airhoses. This was as a result of several nasty accidents and lots of near misses where jubilee clips and other simalar attachments have come loose and the hose plus it's coupling have struck people.

Do not use jubilee clips! Guidance from authorative sources such as the British Compressed Gases Association will confirm.

I am confused.

Common opinion seems to be no. However, I downloaded Information Sheet 51 from the British Compressed Air Society which states, "This type of clamp is widely used to secure hoses supplying compressed air to hand-held tools", and "There are no legal provisions, which rescrict or prohibit the use of such a clamping device".

Can anyone clarify?

I have in the past been advised by a HSE inspector to avoid using jubilee clips.

The reasoning given being that they could be easily unscrewed (defeated) by an operator.

They had previously been favoured by the engineering department for exactly the same reason (ease of maintenance).

Havn't much experience with compressed air however if you consider the codes of practice for portable oxy-acteylene equipment (BCGA CP7 i belive) Jubliee clips are certainly a no-no. Indeed any locally manufactired hose is, you are supposed to have the in house expertise, test rigs etc for testing all these hoses.
While you don't have the explosion risk, the risk from detached hoses is still there. (But consider how many samll workshops routinely cut out damaged section of hose etc!)

I would certainly avoid them.

Incidently you do need to be careful when interpeting some of the codes of pratice. We recently had an issue with a plumbed in propane cylinder which feed multiple bunsen burners. We were advised that according to the BCGA CPA23 the bunsen hose should be secured to both burner and gas tap as it all comprises a pressure system.

I tried all sorts of searches and the nearest I got was that bunsen burners in educational facilities were exempt from PSS regs. Other information states it is dangerous to secure the burner to the system. When speaking direct to BCGA we were advised to speak to thebunsen / hose supplier - what a run around - To date the suppliers state they know of no law, regulation etc that stipulates the requirement.

So even the experts arn't always sure!

Regards

Jon
