Posted By John Webster Chris There was a fatal accident at Birsay, Orkney 3 years ago when a chopper was undertaking work for the Northern Lighthouse Board. The underslung load was affected by an updraft and struck the tail rotor. The load was too light and aerodynamically unstable. It was believed that had somebody on the ground been able to tell the pilot the load was becoming dangerous, he might just have had enough time to jetisson. Recommendations were made following the Fatal Accident Enquiry and new guidance was to be produced. I don't have the details, but these were to include ensuring air/ground communication during the lift. So check that the info you have found has been updated to include that guidance.
