Posted By A. Fergusson Looking to improve the control of ladders/steps on site. While accepting ladders have limited use how often do we feel they need to be formally inspected. Above the normal user inspections

Posted By Jeff Watt We do them once a year but they are all internal metal step types. If yours are outside, exposed to chemicals, routinely getting struck by vehicles, used by contractors, wooden left in the rain then dry out in the sun etc. you may feel it is worthwhile to formally check them more often. With all "how often should I check questions" where there isn't a prescribed answer from an ACOP or lead industry body, I usually adopt the take a small period and work up i.e. take your entire ladder population or a large enough sample to be representative of all your work areas and conditions, check them out every week for month one. If you detect zero faults check just at the end of month 2 and month 3. If there are no faults again, check at end of month 6. If there are still no major faults you have assessed and collected evidence that once a year is a valid checking period in my opinion. What can I say, its an approach that works for me. It may not work in your environment. All the best of luck Jeff
