I heard this on the radio, apparently overheard in a shop;
'Bottle of Worcester sauce, please'
'Sorry, it's off the shelves, cancer scare'
'Oh, packet of chinese chicken wings then'
'Sorry, off the shelves, cancer scare'
Oh, really? Well, shepherd's pie then'
'OK, no, hang on, that's off the shelves too, cancer scare'
'You mean evrything I want is off the shelves because of a cancer scare?'
'Yes, sorry'
'In that case, I'll just have a packet of fags then'
There's a message in here about risk perception, or something,
John

I agree totally, the Sudan 1 scare was such an over the top response. How much did that cost industry and the government?
In reality there is virtually zero risk associated with eating one of the 'contaminated' products, yet millions must have been lost by recalling them.
I don't think the press helped either, they just love that sort of headline and milk the public perception of risk to sell papers.

And the fact that they've used Sudan Black and a lot of it, (similar substance but not exactly the same - for the pedants) in school chemistry classes for over a hundred years without masks, I suppose doesn't really count. One lesson would probably release more particles than eight million bottles of HP.
I loved that one about the fags.

Someone told me that you would have to eat 100 shepherds pies a day for the rest of your life to get cancer at this dose.
I am therefore quitting smoking and will now have 20 shepherds pies a day instead. I am concerned that at this dose I will get the worlds first case of Mince Cancer.
