Posted By Bill Morrison1 Our company has around 50 vans which deliver pharmaceuticals to local pharmacy’s etc. The intention is to fit tracking devices to each vehicle to monitor activity, provide extra security for drivers etc. No surprise that most drivers are up in arms over this as it is seen as yet another “Big Brother” is watching us issue. Does anyone have any experience of the issues we should be considering with implementing this? Thanks Bill

Posted By George Wedgwood We have over two hundred lorries and most are fitted with tracking devices, with position being monitored on a central PC. Condition of work and not an infringement of personal liberty! Drivers who stray too far from their routes cause a bleep and attract attention of Transport Manager, who may investigate if deviation looks odd. It has not caused any problems so far.

Posted By Geoff Norman Bill In our organisation we have used trackers on vehicles to assist in the response times for incidents, such as locating the nearest response vehicle to an incident. We too got the arguments about 'big brother' watching, but sold it with regards to the H&S of individuals who work alone, because we are able to monitor where they are, if there are any problems. If individuals are attending incidents in specific locations and we have not heard from them within specific timescales contact is made with them and if no response is received, then someone is despatched to investigate. We have strict protocols in place as to who can monitor the system and when. I.e. individuals are not allowed to use the system just to spy on employees. We do however do planned safety monitoring with individual’s line managers to check matters, such as speeding, as the system is able to identify the speed of vehicles and this is fed back in reviews with individuals. The implementation of the system was agreed with the consultation of local safety representatives who are key to its sucess.

We have a duty to maintain high levels of Health & Safety for every driver, particularly as you work remotely for lengthy periods of time. Your safety and working practices are of paramount importance to the Board of Directors and we feel the need to quickly identify your location in any unfortunate incident. Vehicle security is also important to us and the system will increase our chances of recovering stolen vehicles quickly. Also the system will help us all a great deal with Inland Revenue directives regarding the reporting of business and non-business mileage declaration. Posted By Andrew Johnson Hi Bill, we also supply vehicle tracking systems and I would have to agree with you it has the potential to be a touchy subject if not handled correctly. You have a number of 'user-friendly' options. They definitely include the health and safety one as discussed in a previous answer. As you can also get discounts on your insurance policy then this is another good reason (without wanting to watch the drivers) to fit systems. However, we have found (and therefore recommend) that being straightforward is almost always the best option. You are fitting it to best use the fleet. This safeguards jobs as it increases your efficiency as a company. What you might find is that if anyone does leave in protest, they are most likely going to be the deadwood you are better off without anyway. I hope this helps.
