Posted By James Perry Colleagues I'm currently trying to write access procedures/SSOW for maintenance/cleaning tasks within our Spray Dryer "Hot Boxes". Temperatures whilst on production can reach up to 55 degrees C and the atmosphere is very "dry". My limited knowledge tells me that we need to limit exposure times and provide hydration and rest breaks, but unfortunately it stops there. The most intensive work that would be necessary to perform in these areas whilst hot would be replacing/fixing valves or cleaning after a plant malfunction. Any advice on methods of control, exposure times and provision of welfare, etc. would be much appreciated. Regards Jim Perry (SafetyRep)

Posted By Stuart Nagle James. Your 'hot boxes' may well fall under the auspices of the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 - get a copy and have a read, theres some good advice. Accidents in such environments involve; - several guys killed in industrial dryers over the last few years guy killed in industrial dishwasher guys killed in industrial machinery (the type you can get inside) through failure to isolate correctly and/or being started up because no one knew they were inside Regards...
