my wife works for large supermarket company, (weekends p/t) who shall remain nameless, but Sharon Osbourne tries to convince us she shops there.
Recently they started a young school leaver (16)in the staff canteen, who whithin days was left on her own, cooking and serving, locking up etc, what is the rules regarding machinery, deep fat friers etc for young worker, doesnt seem right to me.

NO it is not right, any one over the age of 16 years but below 18 years is classed as a young person. (YP)
As I recall, and certainly the procedure we follow is:
The employer must carry out a young persons risk assessment, the results must be brought to the attention of the young person and his/her parents and a copy sent to the YP's local careers office for the atention of the youth employment officer, along with a form of which I cant remember its title.
A register of YP's employed within your workplace should also be kept and be available for inspection.
As part of the RA they should also have identified that a YP needs more supervision and as such should be kept within line of sight and certainly should not be operating machinery unsupervised.
All of the above is covered in the various sections of the Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999
