Posted By Christoper Clark Has anybody assessed the issue of working from the top of high top vans (Approx 2.5m high). If so what control measures have you implemented? Any advice appreciated. Chris

Posted By Daniel Stonehouse Do you men working ON the top of vans, e.g. repairing the van roof painting it, etc, or from, which I think you do (but I hope you don't)! In this case a risk assessment would probably result in the following: 1. The roof is not designed as a work platform 2. It is an unstable surface, ie the suspension, lateral movement, etc. 3. Where are the guard rails and how are you going to secure them? 4. What procedures are put in place to stop the van moving whilst people are on it eg being struck by another vehicle, the hand brake failing, etc, 5. Access and egress-some kind of FIXED ladder/steps will be needed. 6. The surface of the roof is almost certain to be smooth and also prone to damage. Sometimes it is better to use work platforms that are designed for the job.

Posted By Christoper Clark Daniel, Sorry I should have been clearer. No I don’t mean working off the roof of the van. The vans have roof racks, which carry ladders and equipment. Access is needed to the roof to secure the ladders. Currently they have a fixed ladder at the rear of the van to access the roof and a walkway in the middle of the van. This arrangement seems to be the norm with the roof rack manufactures. Do you think additional control measures are required? Thanks Chris

Posted By Anthony Elsmore Christopher, On new Ford Transit vans there is an optional extra ladder rack that is spring loaded and allows the rack to fold down the back of the van- allowing ladders to be put on & off from ground level. Not sure what it's called though. Might be worth looking at. Cheers Ant
