I'm trying to put together a central inventory of CoSHH assessments for an engineering site.
For different engines + machines different products are used all of which are mineral oil - albeit slightly different fractions produced by different companies.

They are all used in the same way i.e. for lubrication.

The end product of the assessment is always the same in terms of the useage precautions to take and storage arrangements, so I think repeating the exercise 20 times to get the same results may be overkill.

What does the forum think about having one generic CoSHH assessment for all of the different products?

You can have a single COSHH assessment for different brands of mineral oil - asuming it covers any differences in the way each one is used.

I would, however, recommend that in the assessmnet it clearly states which mineral oils (supply company name and brand/grade) are covered by the assessment. In this way it will not inadvertantly get used where it is not appropriate.

So long as you assessment addresses the usual stuff re the Hazards of the Material, the People exposed, Routes of Exposure and Control Measures etc, then this would seem to be OK to me, SO LONG AS THESE ARE SIMILAR for all the tasks/workplaces etc.

That's what I've always done - including a list of the substances to which the assessment applies, and attaching the msds. It's then very easy to add new substances of the same type as necessary.

No problems with this. The CoSHH guidance suggests generic assessments can be used.

Essentially you are completing a process assessment as opposed to a individual substance assessment.

I once came across a compnay with a paint spray shop - using about 10 different colours, all xylene/white spirit based - so they did 10 assessments and got themselves all confused.

One process based assessment sorted them out....
