Posted By Darren J Green Does any body know where I can get good guidance on safe practice when repairing vehicles at the roadside.Specifically I am talking about commercial tyre fitting. Also a guide on specification for repair vehicles ie reflective stickers lights etc would be useful. Regards Darren

Posted By Martin Gray Darren, Get a copy of PAS 43 Safe Working mof Vehicle Breakdown and Recovery Operators ISBN 0-580-33333-7 from British Standards Institute. The police require any garages working on thier vehicle recovery schemes to have attained PAS 43 accreditation as a minimum standard. Your questions will be answered in this document as it covers issues about Vehicles including conspicuity, Equipment, Personal Safety and PPE, Premises, Technicians, and Standard Operating Procedures. Following an HSE investigation into a work related road death on the M5 Motorway in Gloucestershire in August 2003 the HSE used PAS 43 as the basis for their investigation which resulted in Wincanton being prosecuted for breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act.
