We are looking at using one of our employees, who has volunteered his services (on his rest days) to maintain the grounds on our 15hectare site. He is formerly a head groundsman at an 'estate' and maintained 'parks' also. Therefore, I would deem him as competent by experience.
The question I have, is other than doing the traditional COSHH & RA's, PUWER assessments, MHO assessments, what else do I need to consider? Clothing, PPE etc., I am aware but is there something I am missing? I presume there are no special regulations that I may have overlooked or licences that I require?
As a footnote, not all the 15 hectare is grassland!! Probably about half of this.
Thanks.

You might need to look at competence under the Pesticides Regs.
Best idea - sit down with him and get him to talk through with you all the things he thinks the job will involve - if any of them sound unfamiliar then you need to research them further. We used to have a similar situtaion and that's what I did!

Aside from any H&S issues you may want to review the Working Time Directive. (Maximum hours and rest days per week etc.)

I agree with working time directives, lone working is also a common function for landscape working

Warren,
It strikes me that as this guy was head groundsman on an estate, he is therefore the competent person on these matters and should therefore be well able to advise you on the requirements for the job. Go with Heather's suggestion, and discuss the matter with him,
regards,
Philip

You might want to look at the Institute of Groundsmanship - based in Milton Keynes I think.
