Can anyone tell me if planning to operate a consultancy in France / from France would be a viable proposition??
Any information / tips would be much appreciated.

Lynchy,
1. you have to speak fluent French (like wot I do)
2. You need the history : who have you worked for before.
3. You need the contacts
And then all the problems of moving to France and starting up a business (actually both are much easier than they used to be)
One thing in your favour : France is not, as is the UK, supersaturated with consultants. i.e. there ain't that much competition. Or not that we have noticed, anyway.
We have had one or two people put on to us by IOSH in the past and we have been very pleased to help them. So if you need any more info send me an e-mail.

Its doable. In my last job I worked a lot in France, just make sure you get your head around not just the French H&S regs, but also their way of doing business.
I'm not saying in a typically British way that its worse than ours, but it certainly is different. Its the company-running and decision making process which to a Brit mind can seem interminably tortuous. On the other hand, once they've generally discussed something to death and chewed it over for several eons and agree with the benefits they will go and implement it very very well.
Good luck - I envy you. I've recently taken the plunge from employment into the murky waters of consultancy and for years have fancied moving abroad before we're lumbered and dominated by kids but haven't plucked up the courage to do it. Yet.

My wife dragged me back to London from France (Paris) after having worked there for over ten years. If you want to get poor, go to France. If you want to continue to get rich, have less administration and red tape but have a poor retirement, stay in GB.
My job in France was Charge d'affaires for a faraday cage manufacturer (EMC and MRI). Before that I was working on commission only selling heavyside building materials to Builders' merchants in Normandie and Bretagne
My return was not because I could not make a success of my career, but because of too many government controls and paperwork.
Best to have your domicile in GB and do half a week in France each week. Compared to France, GB is a paradise for businesses. That's why the French open up businesses in Ashford. There are plenty of ways to find contracts in France. Embassy, BOAMP, Chambres de commerce, etc
Hope this helps
