Posted By Wazza Look at it from a simplistic point of view - what do you provide if your firm does anything (if anything)? Suggest asking for Policy documentation, whether they have a management system, who is responsible within their organisation for H&S and also, if they are to work, employers all risk insurance policy (and cover - perhaps £10M?). If you like I can provide you with some of the documentation we use, with a copy of our terms of reference for contractors which you may [expletive deleted]ise if you so wish. Email me direct if you want them. Regards Warren

Posted By Charley Farley-Trelawney Glynn Best thing you can do is learn about 'managing contractors' you will find a mass of information on the web, in the meantime I suggest you draw up a list of all your contractors and create a contractor assessment questionnaire, there is specific information you need to know, once you have inspected the returned information and decide to engage them it then starts with induction procedure including signing in and out then on to the method statements, work permits, monitoring the work etc etc etc, there is an order to it all as well, method statements and RA's are a fair starting point after you have been satisfied with all the other information supplied. Sound like an onerous task, but its not really dont forget the 5 or more rule as well! Best of luck Charley

Posted By Michael Baron Hi Glynn My perception of this statement is that there should be a system or procedure in place to ensure effective management of contractors. The HSE publication HSG159: Managing Contractors (ISBN 0 7176 1196 5) can be quite useful - I have recently implemented a Management of Contractors system based on the 5 steps listed there. I would strongly recommend that anyone hiring contractors takes steps to ensure they are competent to do so and maintains documented evidence. If you wish, I can send you a copy of the form I use to assess contractors and also a training powerpoint for Line Managers. They are not earth shattering but they will give you an idea of what is involved. Rgds Mike
