Posted By Pete Moran Jim....if driving purely off road (and not even crossing the public highway) there is no need for a conventional driving licence. You have to make sure that the driver is trained and competent of course and the best way of demonstrating this is through one of the many plant card schemes available such as NPORS or CPCS.

Posted By Stephen_S_Edwards Back in the dim and distant past I was a dumper driver for a while. I was driving dumpers a long time beofre I had a driving licence. You do need the correct construction certification, however. From memory, it was a competence test and a bit of a theory questionnaire.....half a day!

Posted By steven bentham A driver needs to have sufficient instruction, training and supervision to drive the dumper safely . (failure may lead to prosecution)
This would vary from a 18 year old to a 30 year old experienced driver, usually for the latter a competency assessment is done and then any top up training.
The training should but not necessarily legally be accreditied as part of a scheme . .
Buyer be aware, plenty of training bandits in this area!
Lots of problems with dumpers, lots of serious accidents, like telehandlers a very powerful machine and very easy to turnover
