Hi all
Is there anything to stop people working in IT in an office with no natural light if there is adequate lighting and ventilation?
If they don't want to and by law.
Thanks
Caroline

Legally every workplace shall have suitable and sufficient lighting which shall, so far as is reasonably practicable, be by natural light.
So you can take into account the cost, time and effort required to provide natural light in deciding what is reasonable.
hope this helps.
Danny.

Legally, this is acceptable.
If they 'don't want to'.........well, there are a lot of other job opportunities out there I'm sure for skilled IT people?

I have written a couple of times now about business reasons [elsewhere]. This is another case - a sub-terranian workforce on artifical light will not feel as good as a workforce overlooking a peaceful lake with wildfowl [or at least that's the common perception].
Maybe they will work better if they feel better? Might give a benefit to the investment in windows.

Caroline,
You do not say whether a Display Screen Equipment assessment has been carried out, or whether you have asked all staff to fill in a questionnaire.
The basis of DSE Regs gives you the legal answer to your question, and as you may know, you are required to act on the results of assessments, but if there is widespread objection to working in ill lit conditions, consultation would seem to be the key.
It is surprising how people will respond if their opinions are sought, and if they see some actions from management with respect to these opinions.
If you haven`t consulted fully, try it, it may be the answer to your problem.

Hello Caroline,
Have you considered changing the lighting to daylight fittings?
One of our managers has had them put in his new office and after a couple days to get use to the change in light thinks they are exceptional, they make the room in his opinion much nicer and more relaxing to work in as the lighting is more akin to working in an office with an abundance of natural light.
You should be able to get them through any electrical company in your area and although they maybe a little more expensive are worth it in the long run.
Regards
Greame.
