Quick question - Though you may wonder why anyone is looking at the IOSH website on a Saturday night (wife out, I'm babysitting our kids - or is it parenting?)
Anyway - I've been out of this forum for a few months so may have missed a change of moderator, but have they suddenly got very tough on threads wandering off subject and becoming chat?
Isn't the interaction of fellow safety professionals as important as the gaining of useful information on these bulletin boards?
I appreciate that moderation should take place if offence is being caused, but there have been times when the chat on this forum has been especially helpful – such as the incident of Rob with Chappy (which I am still on tenterhooks to find out what happen at the meeting with the MD)
Could someone please explain the heavy handed moderation please
Thanks
James

I am another one looking at the site on a Saturday - been out all day, knackered and nothing on the box.
I think the Iraq/American comments did it for the Rob and Chappy thing.
Anyway it may raise it's head under another title for the final outcome. Hope he finds a good job meantime.

Some of our threads do go rather way off line and, after a while they tend to end up with two or three people swopping jokes/insults. Which is the time for the moderator to close the thread. As they do.
On the other hand, a number of such threads are allowed to continue for some time, perhaps as long as they continue to be informative as well as amusing. This does indeed help to build up good relationships with fellow professionals. An important, if unmeant, characteristic of this forum.
On the third hand, I have recently e-mailed directly to the moderator, asking for certain threads to be pulled. (one totally political, the other an obscene joke) I dare say I was not the only reader to do that, and those threads were rapidly deleted.
On the fourth hand, a year or so back I had one of my own threads pulled because I had been a bit too "commercial" in my comments.
All in all I think they do a fair job. (mine's a Bowmore no ice thanks Martin)

Even sadder, I'm looking at this on Sunday afternoon and I have no excuse!
Actually it's just a case of bad timing - the two threads locked by Martin on Friday were the first two for ages. We had gone a bit OT - he had let us carry on like it for some time and he was very nice about the reason for the locking.
You will find plenty of banter around the serious stuff does still go on in this forum and I think it's all the better for it. I certainly know of some over-moderated forums where such a thing would not be allowed and the forums have become sterile and underused.
Totally agree with Merv that while the odd bit of humour livens up a thread, this is not the place for overtly political postings and certainly not the place for poor taste jokes. It is essential to read Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy though if you want to catch all the references....
Rob, if you're reading this, I'm hoping it went well for you on Friday - sorry the thread you started got locked - please let us know how things are if you can.
