we are using LPG/ propane for heating metal parts prior to welding process. here we face a problem to find a method to verify whether the propane/lpg cylinder is full or empty. the practise we observed is that persons pushing the valve with a small rod and check the flow of gas. the cylinder is too heavy to weigh manually and do not have any gauges to measure the gas pressure.
i would like to know if there any specific method to check the propane/ LPG cylinders are full or empty?
regards,
Roshan

Poking stuff into the valve is a definate no-no.
The only safe and reliable way to check the contents of LPG cylinders is by weight.
Experience of handling the cylinders will give a pretty accurate idea of when they are close to empty though.
Why do you need to know? If it's to reduce downtime during cylinder changes, this can be eliminated by having two cylinders and an automatic changeover manifold that kicks in when the one cylinder is empty.

Since the gas is in liquid form within the container, you should be able to feel it sloshing about.
In any case, if it's empty the gas ceases to come out. Which also occurs if you exceed the withdrawal rate for the cylinder.
