Domestic microwave used in commercial kitchen

Posted By Andrew Beveridge Hi All, Please can anyone point me to where i may find guidance on the above.
We appear to be about to order a number of domestic appliances for use in staff canteens; where staff are allowed to heat their own food; and also to be used within the main kitchen that produces food for our office canteen.
We also have a similar issue with domestic fridges and freezers.
I am trying to find out about 'fit for purpose' etc and would be grateful for any pointers etc.
As always, many thanks in anticipation.
Best regards Andy

Posted By Bill Elliott Andrew, Microwave ovens are grouped into four main power bands for commercial use - light, medium, heavy and extra heavy duty. These are linked to the proposed use of the appliance ranging from one or two times a day for a light duty to almost continuous use for the extra heavy duty. Most domestic appliances would not meet the power rating necessary to fall into the first category and would be considered unsafe to use in a production facility. Domestic ovens are neither designed for heavy use in their finish which is generally painted or coated steel which if not regularly cleaned (most manufacturers recommend cleaning after each use)can corrode or even be potential fire risk. Commercial ovens are built to withstand heavy use and heavy cleaning and are generally stainless steel throughout. Generally the greater power rating the quicker the appliance will heat. Repeated use of a low power oven cna result in inadequate heating and cool spots in foods with the inevitable food poisoning risks.

Posted By Stephen J W Clegg. Hello Andrew, this situation reminds me of a similar scenario involving a previous employer.
Domestic appliances were bought and used in a commercial setting, when the appliances failed/broke (within 12 months of purchase) they were taken back to the shop for a replacement/refund, only to be told that as they were not used for the intended purpose i.e. in a domestic setting, the guarantee/warranty was invalid.
This was around 15 years ago, so things may well have moved on since then but I think it’s worth checking…
I’ve spoke to a colleague about this and the feeling is that as commercial appliances are used more frequently than domestic they are therefore more robust?
You would also need to consider information, instruction, training, maintenance etc… as its work equipment?
I am sure others will add to this posting, good luck!
Steve.
