Vision correction provision for Fork Lift Truck Drivers

The question has been raised by our Forki Lift Truck Drivers that side shields on prescrition safety glasses can restrict their peripheral vision.
Clearly it is important for a driver to wear glasses to correct their vision if identified by an eye test. Given that there is no need for the driver to wear Safety Glasses and ordinary glasses are acceptable as safe, can anyone tell me what their approach is to meeting this requirement in the absence of a specific regulatory requirement? Do we give them free eye tests and glasses or say they have to pay for their own? It would also be useful if a comment on the legal issues around this was included.

Site work can always present hazards such as flying dust and particles so in my company we insist that everyone wears light eye protection at work, including FLT operators. That is the result of our risk assessment. Should vision be a problem we provide prescription eyewear free (not fashion frames!) and peripheral vision is eliminated by the selection of good quality 'wrap round' eyewear. Over-specs are generally not suitable for employees working but will be OK for visitors etc.
The law requires a general risk assessment of your activities and site risks as well as a task specific RA and an individual PPE assessment - and that means "personal" not generic! Do that and you should help reduce risk and ensure employee cooperation - they should be involved in any PPE selection exercise. George
