Posted By Sylvia Tyler I have manufactured my own safety compliance audit in Excel against our in-house systems, but I'm now looking for a more sophisticated system, to generate reports, to interogate etc, but still easy to use and understand! I have made some contacts and will be researching this area, but if someone out there has been through this process and has any guidance or pitfalls in this type of system, I would appreciate you sharing it with me. Regards Sylvia

Posted By Robert K Lewis Sylvia Always a tricky area to get right - It is one that I have spent some considerable time honing. The most common problem that I am aware of is that there is often not enough drilling down into the systems to establish what is actually needed to evidence compliance. We tend to be unaware also that we make assumptions about our own internal systems and think all bases have been covered. The new ISO 14001 is very explicit in clause 4.5, which is an addition, about the meaning of compliance and anticipates evidence to show ongoing compliance with legislation and other requirements at all times. The OHSAS clause 4.5.1, is a little less explicit but the external auditors would argue it has the same intent. You need to ask some searching questions of your compliance system to verify it can do this. Merely having statutory documents completed weekly does not evidence ongoing compliance at all times. Think about the other evidence that could or is potentially produced already in the system. If you want to have a further discussion email via the link above. Bob
