Has anyone carried out an Epidemiology analyses within an educational environment (or any other really) that I could see, that may help me with my NVQ4?
This would be much appreciated

Tracey,
This one's popped up a few times recently on the forums with little success.
What is the NVQ definition of epidemiology?
I ask because depending on how you define it might help you answer.
If you use the definition "a branch of medical science concerned with epidemic diseases" then you'll probably not get far - well not until you are a qualified medical doctor anyway.
If you use the definition "applying science to the health of large numbers of people" then you could probably include OH monitoring of staff that you do e.g. lung function testing for teachers exposed to chalk dust (I know they all use dry wipe boards now, but hopefully you get the idea).
Who knows perhaps you could even stretch the definition to include the statistical analyses of any stress survey you may have done to demonstrate compliance with the new management standards.
Just a few thoughts, I don't claim to know the answer, but keep us informed.

Epidemiology is the branch of medical science cocnerned with the occurrence and control of diseases in populations.
From a H&S perspective it is more to do with studying deaths from e.g mesothelioma and linking those deaths to the deceased's working history and (we now know) exposure to asbestos containing materials. It often consists of examining the history of many hundreds and thousands of people.
There are two main approaches: A group of people say in a factory, may be follwed for their lifetime, to see what diseases they incur. Comparisons can then be made with what levels might have been expected. Alternatively, a number of cases of a disease may be studied and each person carefully matched with a person of the same age, sex, etc in an effort to determine some common factor that is present for all those who have the disease and is not present for those who are free of the disease. This factor may be the cause of the ill health e.g. smoking and lung cancer
All in all a fairly complex activity... not something for an NVQ in my opinion.
PS Epidemiology is also concerned with "epidemics" but in a public health context. For example trying to establish the pattern of spread of infections such as e coli or salmonella and this idneitfy the source.
Hope this helps

It is the Doll and Peto study for tobacco, you should also be able to find their asbestos study.
I am not sure what the NVQ is asking for here as I don't have the standard to hand. The use of epidemiological is going to be via published reports as the numbers available to individual practitioners is relatively low and they are insufficient to provide stastistically reliable results.

I assume IOSH were involved in developing the requirements of the NVQ 4, so we could always ask them what they had in mind for that section...
Is there anyone out there from IOSH who could comment?
