Posted By Jennifer Kelly Bit of a paperwork question here. I have been asked to make a recommendation based on a document that I have never heard of and cannot find a cross reference for it in either Tolleys or Fire Safety - An Employers Guide. The document in question is called 'Design Principals of Fire Safety' and was commissioned and issued by the Department of the Environment in 1993. Whilst I think the document is very useful I am a little puzzled that I cannot find any references to it and therefore would like to know what others on this forum think of it and if they could give me some idea of it's 'status'. Regards Jennifer

Posted By Jennifer Kelly Thanks for that RP but it doesn't mention the document I am asking about (unless I have not checked properly) which is not a BSI standard or an HSE guidance document hence my concern at using it in a report. But the link is useful for future reference so again thank you. Anybody else got any ideas?

Posted By Jennifer Kelly Thanks for the offer of a copy but I already have one. In essence what I am asking is why is the DOE issuing documents on a subject like fire safety?

Posted By Jane Blunt Dear Jennifer As mentioned, this is a large document. The foreword declares that it is aimed at Building designers, fire safety officers, building control officers, and others (including students). It appears to be a very practical manual, and the chapter headings are: Science of fire Legislative framework (this chapter may well be partly out of date) Means of escape Internal Fire Growth and Linings Internal Fire Spread and Structural Fire Protection External Fire Spread Access and Facilities for the Fire Service Fire Safety Engineering Fire Safety Management Property Protection and Site |Fire Precautions Other Useful References Technical Appendix. Posted By Jennifer Kelly Jane, As mentioned I have a copy of the document and I agree with you that it is useful but why is it produced by the DOE and not the HSE or the Fire Authority? The report that I am putting together is going in front of a group of people who are likely to check things like the references hence the reason for checking.

Posted By Jonathan Carrick Jennifer, As far as I understand, it is simply that the DoE was the “governing body” for building regulations at the time. Clearly they are not any more! Hope that answers the question. J
