Posted By claire lewis Could someone please enlighten me as to the requirements for schools regarding fire drills, fire exits etc. Specifically are schools required to register plans of their buildings designated fire exits with the fire brigade and do they have to have fire certificates etc? If the school wishes to re-classify an existing fire exit/door to no longer be considered a fire exit, what procedures does it have to follow before being allowed to do so? I would welcome any information on the above. Thank you

Posted By Chris Pope Schools are not required to have fire certificates becuase the Sec of State didn't ever designate them. this applies even for boarding schools provided all of the activities therein are educational You need to do your own fire risk assessment. The DfES will regulate you. They ask the Fire Brigade if they are happy with what you are doing. So if you want advice ask the fire brigade. DfES publish a book on School fire safety, and HSE have one for £9.50 called Fire safety an employers guide which is pretty good. Soon (is it 2006) we anticipate the introduction of the Fire Reform order which will make a specific requirement for a person of group of people who are competent in fire safety management to be responsible for fire safety in all workplaces.
