Posted By J Knight Hi Folks, I'm looking for bright ideas about practical and cheap (preferably free) methods of canvassing opinions in an extremely dispersed and perhaps not greatly motivated workforce. The idea is that H&S reps should be reps and not just pursuing their own agendas. I'm writing our consultation policy at the moment, and I have no problems where everybody works on one site, as they do in our two admin offices and the care centres/hospices. However, we also have 400 charity shops, each with one or two employees, and around 300 employees delivering domiciliary care, and its these that I need to tap. Their H&S issues are probably the most difficult in the company, and they are also the people most at risk. Any practical suggestions welcome, John

Posted By Lilian McCartney Aren't they split into area groups for management purposes and have team meetings in these groups? Put H&S as standing item on agenda at these meetings.

Posted By J Knight This is a fair idea, but ideally I want themt o be able to put forward issues without management being present. Our management isn't obstructive or negative about H&S, but even so people are slightly inhibited when the boss is around, John

Posted By Ron Hunter Your problems may be similar to those faced by large Local Authorities trying to 'reach' hundreds of part-time cleaning and catering employees across hundreds of sites. One of our approaches was to take the meeting to them. Consultation Forum travels around locations, local staff given time (and pay) to discuss issues before meeting proper. Nothing is for free, but a carefully crafted anonymous survey may help. Do you have a 'House' magazine you could use with a tear-off or return section? Biggest pitfall is to go to all the trouble of engaging with people locally and then failing to continue to communicate and react to issues raised - beware of raising expectations and not delivering!
