Has IOSH determined what excessive is for this site?
Picture this, some poor schmuck being paid very poorly, understaffed and overworked with a hell of a boss whi continually puts pressure on to get the assessments etc done and new areas to have documentation put in place etc. etc..
What do we do then if they ask for 41?!?
I believe the guillotine has been outlawed as there was insufficient guarding and we would therefore have to look for another way of punishing them.
By the way, have you taken your blood pressure tablets yet and arranged an appointment with Paul McKenna to be hypnotised and have your red anger/aggression turned to blue calming happiness?

I have just skimmed the many answers here, and I have just posted to another thread about 'elf n safety.
In one post we are complaining that idiotic judgement calls are leading us to be a laughing stock, and in this post we are complaining about plagerism.
Maybe those making the dumb policy are too scared to ask for help?
Can't help thinking we would throw the baby out with the bath water if we don't help each other.
Maybe IOSH could redesign this board to include a quick vetting process and displaying our membership numbers? Anonimity may be contributing to the problem.
Oh, someone asked about difference between supplying things for company H&S and for consultants ... one asks for help to save time, the other sells the time saved.
I have been both.

Nobody can be expected to know everything, and this site, like many others out there, is a source of information.
Does it really matter who is 'worthy' enough to receive it? If a consultant has been asked something that they don't know off hand then their job is to go and find the answer and there's nothing wrong with using this site as one source of knowledge. Yes, they may make a living by then adapting that information to the issue they have been given but that's no different than someone who is employed - they still take money off someone for giving H&S answers and advice.
This site works by the free giving of help and advice, but if people start piously judging the recipient first then it is a sad step backwards for H&S in the UK. It sounds like a storm about nothing. If I have something and someone can use it then fair enough, its swings and roundabouts and that's how it works best.
If people do just nick stuff and use it without changing anything then they are retards who will come unstuck one day and are not really worth the bother of getting worked up about.
(To declare an interest - I sit on both sides of the fence. I work as an employed H&S Manager for 2 days a week and as a consultant for the other three).

I'm sorry, but I think that you are missing the point here. People like myself, Dave and others are not for one minute suggesting that we shouldn't be assisting each other on this site. I have responded positively to numerous requests for help and support, and most of the people I have sent "stuff" to appear to appreciate it and, on many occasions, have offered something in return. In addition, I have never been afraid to accept my weaknesses (which are many and varied!) and have asked for help myself; that help has always been appreciated. I can assure you that I do not produce policies, procedures, checklists, safe systems, training briefs, etc, then sit back smugly and refuse to let anyone else ever see any of it.
What some of us are getting really XXX off with are those posters who appear to be completely incapable of producing anything (even the basic stuff) themselves, particularly when there is so much stuff available free of charge on the internet. Even worse is when these same people advertise their services as world leaders! and use other people's hard work - not for the advancement of workplace health and safety -but for their own personal gain!
I do agree that it is a shame that some of us feel that we have to "vet" people before sending things out. I have just produced a new policy on the use of PPE (local council). It's taken me a few days, during which I have; consulted with supervisors and staff to see what they thought should be in it; looked at the PPE Regs and HSE guidance (by clicking on "search" and typing in words like "Personal Protective Equipment Regulations" and "HSE"!!!); and by copying, cutting and pasting, typing-up what I think should be in the new policy. I would genuinely appreciate some comments on what I have produced. Problem is that, I have now become so bitter and twisted by the thought that some people may offer to look at it for me, and will then simply add it to the mass of information they have gained from the efforts of others in order to offer it for their own personal financial gain.
On the other hand, perhaps I've always had a "chip on my shoulder" - as well as not having a sense of humour!, and probably need to "lighten-up"
If anyone would like to give me some feedback on a new PPE policy, I can be e-mailed direct!!!
Regards
Mike

Mike, thank 'evens at least someone sees where I am coming from!
I do not have the slightest problem with sharing any info and quite afew of you have benefitted from that.
The point is, can a consultant or someone with very little experience, etc etc then use that info to give to a client and say it is their own and get paid for it!
Now I am not and cannot say however if you put names into the search engines on this chat site you can get a potted history of what that member has asked for or topics they have been involved in since they became members.
Suffice to say that if you are a consultant and have asked for 'a lot of quite specific' elf 'n' safety stuff and then use that for personal gain in your business!!

I think I have fairly clearly given my point of view on previous responses to this thread.
Now, as a consultant of about 15 years standing, where do I get my information from ?
* Legislation
* Industry groups
* Web sites
* Discussions with peers
* Contacts with clients
* Safety organisations
* Professional journals
* Jurisprudence
* The IOSH chat show
* Osmosis
When you come up with a new client who has the same old problems you CANNOT just recycle/cut-and-paste the same old recommendation.
Know your client. Know their limitations. Know their competences. Know their people. Know their resources, budget, time schedule...
Now, if you are lucky or just very very good you can come up with the most cost-efficient recommendations tailored specifically to them.
God, have I been lucky lucky lucky for the last fifteen years.
This said, I will ALWAYS offer free help and advice to a site specific H&S person. I did that job myself for 12 years before going independant. they have my deepest sympathy, kind regards and a large scotch whenever we meet up.

Merv... In the years that I have have been practising H&S within the doctrine of the MOD you have been a constant and leading light within this forum.. I try as often as I can to offer as much assistance as possible to those requiring help... and for that I congratulate you. As a regular 'surfer' you get to know the people that may answer the questions that many may steer cleer of due to the fact that that are either contencious or out of their remit! I ask for info purely because I look upon members here as an extra source of knowledge.... you do not have to reply and it is upon the individuals integrity that they share info will those who may ask. I am sat in Iraq at 45 degrees conducting H&S issues relvant to the 250 personnel on my unit that require me to 'have a vested interest in their H&S!' I do not confess to be an expert in industry or have commercial awareness.. I have my own areas of knowledge..
I read this forum and 99% of the time feel that we are 'doing' the right thing...
I am MIOSH and SO proud that i can make a difference.
I am sorry that i didnt make the NEC show this year.. but when I do would enjoy buying certain individuals who bear certain nametags a beer!
Sorry for the spelling but the keyboards full of sand and bloody hard work.. been up for 34 hours aswell!
Kindest Reards Paul
