I work for a large cargo handling company which handles aircraft pallets of up to 5000 kgs. These units have to be manually pushed from the aircraft transportation dollies into our automatic system. Up until now a pallet weight limit of 4000kgs has been placed on the dollies due to the risk of manual handling injuries. A new dolly has been produced and it is claimed that the castors (manual) are more efficient and the weight limit is no longer required. I am looking for a measuring device that could measure the pushing effort required to make a scientific comparison, does anyone know of such a device, or am I looking for an animal that doesn't exist.

We had a similar problem when trying to calculate the force necessary to push wheelchairs, up ramps, etc etc and ended up with a simple device to measure force in Newtons. Have a look at www.alanaecology.com - they provide a range of such simple devices relatively cheaply.

A set of spring scales would do but i'm not sure if you would get some big enough.
