I have to give advice on removing mouldy documents from a damp cellar. Can anyone help with things like a COSHH/Risk Assessment for mould spores. I can then decide what PPE etc wil be necessary.

As this is obviously a consultancy activity I shall simply refer you to the HSE Guidance for "Farmers Lung" as a base guide for your RA [though not to identify the actual airborne contaminants] and identify that you will need to ensure that there are no live spores capable of being ingested or respired.

We have recently undergone a similar exercise where we experienced mould on our documents. You have to be really careful with treating mould, as if you do not treat with the appropriate substance, you could actually make the mould more toxic. We had to carry out exploratory work to find out what the underlying cause was for the mould growth. In the meantime, we called in some professionals, who were able to identify the type of mould, clean down the areas and documents affected and then clean the ventilation system, to prevent further contamination. We have subsequently identified the source of the mould growth and are carrying out building repairs to the property. Not sure if this helps?!

Thanks Caroline, these documents have to be destroyed so we are not interested in preserving them, although we will need to look at the building afterwards.

I did a bit of research when we came across this problem which may be of use if you require. I could also request some information from the project manager who ran this job if you like.
In relation to PPE, I would be tempted to consult the advice of your PPE supplier.
