Posted By Karen Todd Hi all, I've come across what I think is the rather dubious practice of towing things (trailers) with forklift trucks. In my mind, this is not what they were designed for, but can anyone provide guidance or a more technical explanation of why you shouldn't? Thanks, Karen

Posted By George Wedgwood Always try and comply with HSE Guidance in HSG6. I can't see any direct reference to towed trailers on FLTs but if there is a provision by the manufacturer for a towing attachment, then the design should be ok provided the trailer load remains within the manufacturer's stated maximum weight and load. If you have no manufacturer's advice on this, either contect them for advice or stop the practice until you can properly risk assess it - and include a structural strength element to the assessment. generally, I would say that towing only would not be advisable unless the forks were detached so that the operator can concentrate on his towed load and not have to worrk about the forks striking something when turning particularly. I am used to small trucks for towing trailers - 'Toer truck' or 'Tow Truck' (look at http://www.forkliftwarehouse.co.uk/tow-tugs.htm) used to make them specifically for moving machinery around large sites. Posted By Chris Pope I have towed with an FLT. The main point is to risk assess. Are there any crossfalls where the trailer may tip over, how does the driver see around the trailer. Has he got sufficient skill. I have seen a useful towing ball fitted onto a fork, it gave incredible maneovourability for moving caravans around !

Posted By James M Karen I would check with your insurance company as well, you may not be covered to carry out this activity. Jim

Posted By Bill Waddy Hi Karen I've just gone thro the BITA operators safety code for FLT and can only find 2 notes regarding towing with FLT: 19. Do not tow, drag or push other vehicles or loads unless proper attachments are fitted and used. 46. Do not use a lift truck to tow railway cars or wagons or to open or close their doors. Cheers Bill

Posted By TBC I used to work for BP and it was, probably still is common practice to use the FLT to trailers. The operator received specific training and it complied with the manufacturer's information on loads etc. Both must be fitted with compatible couplings of course and the terrain must also be suitable. Hope it helps.
