When you work at site, you will sometimes see people attach their safety harness lanyard on the handrails (in good condition), is that against any requirement? if yes, what is that?
Thanks for your help.

In most cases, the answer is no. However most importantly is not what the anchoring point is, but is it strong enough to withstand the gravity weight of the falling person and is it at the right positioning? In fact anchoring points shall be tested for this purpose. It is possible to design a handrail which incorporates this purpose. An appropriate risk assessment will solve your problem.

Anybody get any information about:
1. the regulation requirement on this issue?
2. the normal handrails' strength, i.e. data to show why "yes" or "no"?
Appreciate for your reply or send email to: uisafe@126.com

Hi, Luan,
Please look at Regulation 8 of the Work at Height Regulations 2005, and Schedule 5 thereof.
Basically it says that the anchor point(s) should be suitable for the foreseeable load.
You would need either : (a) a test load certificate or (b) a structural surveyor's agreement. Both are relatively easy to get.

When I attend a training months ago, someone said the handrails only can suffer ??? (I forgot the number), and not suitable for anchoring the lanyard. (sorry, I shall asked him where the number he get at that monment).
I am not so comfortble with this idea, because from the case study, I can not found a incident caused by welded handrails' (good condition) failure...when I come to several sites, no prohibition rule for this..., people always use lanyard like this...what does this tells?
I just want to soliciting more ideas to see if we can get better practical solusions about this issue. Appreciate with your attention.

The handrail could be used if designed/tested to take the required loadings. They would need to be tested and certifioed as fall arrest capable to 10kN , importantly, in the direction of the load applied in a fall situation. If they are proved to be suitable, it is advisable to connect to lower rails as opposed to the top as this will reduce the turning moment 'lever effect' and therefore reduce the loading on the fixings.
See BSEN 795 anchor devices and BS 7883 Use of anchor devices complying to BSEN 795. These will provide you with all then information you need.

Please see the below information from OSHA:
(10) Anchorages to which personal fall arrest equipment is attached shall be capable of supporting at least 5,000 pounds (22.2 kN) per employee attached, or shall be designed, installed, and used as part of a complete personal fall arrest system which maintains a safety factor of at least two, under the supervision of a qualified person.
Or visit:
http://www.osha.gov/pls/...able=STANDARDS&p_id=9730
Anchorage points, one is 10kn, another is 22.2kn, why the big difference exist?
Very Appreciate with Your Help.
Thanks, Luan
