Posted By Frank Hallett Hi JAI I presume that you have visited the NEBOSH site and viewed the outline syllabus? I have explored the course outline and objectives and discussed some of the issues with NEBOSH with the following answers [which may now be out of date as I did this w/c 1st Aug 2005. The NEBOSH FRM Cert is intended to be offered as either an addition to the NEBOSH General or Const Cert OR as a "stand-alone". The Guidance for course presenters has yet to be finalised and is expected around late September 2005. The actual course is not intended to come on stream until 1st April 2006 to coincide with the RRFSO becoming live. The current course outline indicates a 30hr minimum contact time. If you need this training earlier, you won't be able to get the NEBOSH accreditation to go with it. If you need further info, please contact me direct. Frank Hallett

Posted By Jasonjg This looks quite interesting and possibly useful for myself. I am wondering if it would also complement Dip level 4 and Dip 2 students or would it have already been covered enough within those courses. From my own experience Dip 1 gave a good overview and Dip 2 looks quite deep (not touched that part yet). I guess I will have to visit the website and discover more.

Posted By JAI Frank Thanks for the info We manufacture chipboard and have a high tier COMAH site so we tend to run the risk of fire I have attended various fire risk assessment and warden courses but they don't seem to hit the mark so when I heard about nebosh and read the course notes i thought great but i really do not want to wait another six months Are you aware of any other course available at the moment to cover in depth fire risks?

Posted By Andy Furness Hi all, I am the Chairman of the IOSH Fire Risk Management Specialist Group Working Party that put together the syllabus for the new NVQ level 3 NEBOSH Fire Safety and Risk Management course / programme / award. May I take this opportunity of providing a little brief on the Certificate and how it is likely to be introduced into the current NVQ/QCA programmes. Those persons having attained an NVQ level 3 via the NEBOSH National General Certificate programme can opt by undertaking the 6 elements in unit FC1 and passing both a theoretical paper and a practical paper, can gain an NVQ level 3 award in Fire Safety and Risk Management. Those persons not having achieved an NVQ level 3 via the NEBOSH NGC can complete the management elements of the NGC together with the Fire Safety unit FC1 rather than the entire NGC programme. This 'Unitising' the awards falls in line with the Government / QCA guidelines to allow previous accredited prior learning to be used for gaining qualifications rather than continually re-siting units (going through training programmes) that they have already attained. Course programmes are therefore likely to be offered by training providers covering both the above mechanisms i.e. a full 12 day programme for those who have not undertaken the NEBOSH NGC and a 5 day programme covering the Fire Safety and Risk Management programme. (these durations do not take into account examination days) At our last Working Party meeting we included information gathered from our consultation process so it is likely that the current syllabus shown on the NEBOSH web site may be updated. With regard to other vocational qualifications that may have been achieved i.e. NVQ level 4 OHS I understand that proof of attaining the management level is likely to be taken into account (I feel sure that it will be) and the FC1 elements will need to be completed as they are specific to Fire. With regard to the 2 part Diploma and accredited prior learning I would recommend speaking directly to NEBOSH on this matter. I hope that you can all appreciate that final ratification of the Award has yet to be confirmed, although it is likely in the very near future. It is our intention to also look to the future and NVQ levels 4 and 5 but it has taken some 14 months or so to achieve level 3 With regard to other courses, the reason that we as a group considered the need for such a programme was that there appeared to be little available other than via the established IFE etc. routes which whilst very good come from a fire service/engineering approach - not tailored to fundamental management of fire safety issues from a ‘practitioner level. Should you require further information on trainers/programmes etc. please contact me direct. May I also take this opportunity to thank my fellow working party members Harry Paviour and Dave Smith, for their time and efforts, together with all those who took time to reply during the consultation process Andy Furness Chair IOSH FRMSG 'training for competence' working party

Posted By Chris Black Andy This may seem a stupid question, but will your course address issues arising under the separate legislative framework for fire that exists in Scotland?

Posted By J Knight Eeyup, Well, it looks to me, as a Dip2 bod, that this course will amplify material that was merely mentioned in Dip2. certainly, when I have had to do FSRAs in real life I have found that I have gaps in my knowledge, which this course looks like it would fill. So that's my take on it, and I would like to sign up. Just btw, the original post asked if anybody had any details of cost; nobody will have as yet, but 30 hours tuition won't come cheap unless some local FE college manages to get some funding from somewhere; I would expect cost to be similar to NGC. And yes, fair point, will it mention Scotland? And will it deal with highly regulated areas like Res & Health care where we have separate best practice guidance (NHS Firecode) to follow? Probably not, but it'll still help

Posted By Andy Furness Hi Chris, Yes I understand that the certificate will include Scottish Law, Building Regulations etc. - in line with NEBOSH standards Hi, Dip2 bod, as far as costings go can’t as yet confirm likely rates for other providers although we (you will need to follow my address) will base our contact time on 1 week plus a day for the theoretical and practical exams (inc revision) The HTM,s are sceduled for a revisit in line with the changes to the law and the guidance documentation to be provided by ODPM however at level 3 these will only be touched upon – more depth in level 4/5 Hi, Robert The team invested a lot of time in the production of the syllabus I feel sure that providers will pitch the prices to attract you (I know we will) 1 day/week courses for 7 weeks, or block, or residential I feel sure we will find a way to help you – sorry to be so optimistic !! use my link if you would like more info Andy Furness
